What is Leadership
Leadership is the capacity to influence people toward a shared purpose. It is not about rank or title. It is about creating conditions where people can do their best work, building trust fast enough to ask hard things of people, and making decisions with incomplete information without freezing.
The research on effective leadership converges on a few durable findings: psychological safety enables performance (Edmondson), clear expectations and honest feedback build trust faster than praise, delegation done well is the highest-leverage activity a manager can take, and most leadership failures are failures of communication, not strategy. Indian organisational contexts add layers: hierarchy is culturally encoded, feedback norms are indirect, and managing across generations in family businesses produces unique dynamics.
Why bother
Make it concrete
A VP of Engineering at a Bengaluru unicorn had an outstanding team that delivered slowly. In her 1:1s, problems were always discovered late. Post-mortems revealed issues that had been visible for weeks before they escalated. She ran a psychological safety survey. Her team scored low on 'I can raise a concern without it being used against me.' She ran a month of deliberate norm-setting: explicitly rewarding early problem-raising in team meetings, never reacting with criticism when someone flagged bad news, and personally sharing a recent mistake of her own. In 90 days, issues were raised an average of two weeks earlier. One flagged early saved a three-month delay in the roadmap. That is psychological safety converting directly to organisational performance.
